Along the Pacific coast, in northern Peru, the bodies of hundreds of children and baby llamas are exhumed. All were sacrificed in the 15th century, at the time of the Chimús civilization, the last great kingdom of the Andes before the arrival of the Incas and the Conquistadors.
This is an unprecedented discovery. There is no scientific evidence of another mass killing of this nature and scale in other civilizations. How and why were these sacrifices made?
